NAME: David Gigliotti
WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL DAY LIKE?
As soon as I wake up, I respond to emails (while enjoying a large homemade cappuccino). I take my youngest son to school, then head over to the office. While I’m there, I’ll take care of everything from new customer inquiries to pricing, to coordinating current jobs.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE HOMEBUILDING PROFESSION?
It’s been part of my life since I could walk! Carbide has been a family owned business for more than 25 years. I’m in business with my brothers, Frank and Andrew. When you work with us, there will be a Gigliotti supervising the entire process.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
In the renovation business, no two jobs are ever alike. It never gets boring.
YOUR COMPANY HAS A RATHER UNUSUAL SPECIALTY OF MODULAR ADDITIONS. HOW DID CARBIDE GET INTO THAT AREA?
Some time ago, we set a modular home and thought it would be great to try an addition. Since then, we’ve completed additions in all shapes, sizes and price ranges, from adding a couple rooms to adding an entire 2nd floor. We personally coordinate all the aspects of the addition, and we consistently work with the same team of experienced sub-contractors.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE BENEFITS TO ADDING A MODULAR ADDITION AS OPPOSED TO STICK BUILDING?
Working in a modular format is quicker, cleaner, less expensive, has less exposure to the weather, and most importantly, less disruptive to the customer. Our only stipulation is that it must be a substantially sized project, and that the existing house foundation should be in good condition.
We offer three options for a project: 1. Comprehensive-start to finish; 2. Foundation and essential completion; and 3. Setting and roofing. Every modular home project can be performed with ENERGY STAR as an option.
DO YOU SEE ANY TRENDS IN THE HOUSING MARKET?
There is a trend toward people choosing renovations and additions over purchasing a new home. We work in the Washington, DC metro area, where for some time, we haven’t felt the effects of the recession as badly as the rest of the country. That’s changing, and increasingly, people are opting to save money by staying in their current home.
Another trend we’re seeing is an increase in requests for in-law quarters. Instead of choosing the retirement community option or staying in a large home, many Boomers and seniors are moving in with their adult children.
TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD NOT NORMALLY KNOW ABOUT YOU.
I have three great boys and a wonderful wife.
PROFESSIONALLY SPEAKING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR THE COMING YEAR?
We’ve seen an uptick in our market. We’ve had more inquiries and requests for information for work especially modular construction. This year is definitely looking better than last year!
